Abstract

Aims of this report are focused on an analysis of human skeletal remains and the mortuary practices at Prasat Phanom Wan in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, on two cultural periods there are: the Bronze Age dates to 2,370-3,400 BP. and secondly, the Iron Age approximately dates to 1,770-2,370 BP.

Accordance with sex determination, there are three males, one female, and three individuals who their sex undetermined. Four adults with the age at death ranged between 30-40 years old and the stature estimation of two males was between 162-172 centimeters. Two of seven skulls presented the Mongoloid characteristics and also the pathological lesions like the dental carious, periodontitis and degenerative changes were observed within this prehistoric population.

The mortuary practices of the Bronze Age were similar to the Iron Age practices, both buried with the extended position, wrapped the remains before buried by place their head towards the north, south and northeast, above the scattered pottery sherds and also with some associated finds. The secondary burial practices first appeared in the Bronze Age while the secondary burial jars presented in the Iron Age. These results concluded that there was the continuation of the prehistoric settlements at Phanom Wan and had the relations with the nearby prehistoric communities before the influence of the ancient Khmer dispersed into this area later.
