Abstract

This preliminary report presents the result of the macroscopic and x-ray image examination on the human skeletal remains. Material consists of 53 individual human skeletons uncovered from S5W97 and S86E159 archaelogical test pits, Mueang Sema archaeological site, Sema Sub-district, Sung Noen District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province which was excavated in season 2000-2001 by the 9th Regional Office of Archaeology and National Museum, Nakhon Ratchasima (Presently named the 10th Regional Office of Fine Arts, Nakhon Ratchasima).

According to age at death and sex of these individuals: thirty infants and children skeletons who their age at death were prenatal to fifteen years, eleven adult males, twelve adult females and one adult undetermined sex. The mortality for infants and children was one point three times comparing with the adults. Most adults died in the young adult stage, approximately twenty to thirty-five years. Based on the White American (Trotter & Gleser, 1952) and Thai-Chinese (Theerarattakul & Rakvanichpong, 1982; Sangvichien et al., 1985) stature prediction equations, the mean stature of males was 164-169 centimeters and 155-162 centimeters for females.

The average physical morphology of this population had a relatively long skull, broader face and nasal, and slightly narrow palate. Moreover, some of them had shovel-shaped incisors. The pieces of evidence of oral pathology like caries, antemortem tooth loss, impacted teeth, and moderate to severe dental wear are presented. Also, the skeletal lesions such as the fibrous dysplasia, osteomalacia, osteomyelitis, chronic anemia, and osteoarthritis are seen.
